It is the restaurant that stole the heart of English chef and media star Rick Stein. When asked by the British newspaper, the Daily Mail, to choose one place in the world that he could write a travel article about, he chose Fleur's Place, in Moeraki.
Since 2002, this celebrated restaurant
has been cooking up a sensation from a rustic tin-shed on the old jetty. Previously the site of an early whaling station, the tin-exterior building is actually constructed from gathered collectibles and demolition materials from all over New Zealand. The restaurant, cafe and bar is run by the engaging Fleur Sullivan, who has forged a reputation for splendid dining, after first establishing the well-known Olivers restaurant in Otago.
She has received a multitude of awards for her cuisine and her contribution to tourism.
Fleur's Place has a knock-out setting, whether it be for a hearty dinner or a pick-me-up long black. Situated on the scallop-shaped waterfront, the establishment enjoys views of the water on three sides of the building with cheerfully-painted fishing boats bobbing on the harbour.
The biggest selling point is the "catch of the day", which sets the gold standard for freshness. Fishing boats land catches right into her restaurant, which is a delight to watch. Fleur fuses the freshest seafood with the freshest ingredients from local suppliers, which when combined with the spectacular setting, readily explains why the likes of Rick Stein are raving fans.
