Music famous for its soaring melodies, fire and brimstone will be performed by a mass choir drawn from the central North Island.
"Harmony across the region is the theme bringing these choirs together," says choir media liaison officer John Wanhill.
Twelve choirs, from Taihape to Tauranga, more than 200 singers,will perform. "They had a whacking great practice in Rotorua recently which was, quite frankly, amazing," he says.
"These choirs don't often get the chance to perform together and it's a great opportunity to hear them." The massed choir will be guided by David Squire, who recently worked with the New Zealand Youth Choir.
"The dramatic effect of this master work will be heard at its best as David Squire coaxes power and delicacy, pathos and joy from this huge ensemble," Wanhill says.
"Exciting young" singers Madison Nonoa, Elisha Hulton, Fillipe Manu and Ian Campbell will perform solos at this Saturday's event, offering "fresh" interpretations.
As well as Mozart's Requiem, two of his famous short works will also be performed. The concert has been organised by the NZ Choral Federation and includes at least 50 singers from the Tauranga Civic Choir and Oriana Singers.
