About two thirds of the Green Prescription patients surveyed in the Bay of Plenty area have noticed a change in their health since they "went Green", and well over half (58 per cent) are more active after six to eight months.
Just under 80 per cent of patients are more aware of
and understand the benefits of physical activity, and 80 per cent of those referred are motivated to participate in the Green Prescription programme.
Green Prescription is a Ministry of Health initiative, aimed to help people whose health would benefit from increased physical activity. The programme involves general practitioners and practice nurses giving a 'Green Prescription' to patients, who are then eligible for support and advice through phone calls, face to face contact or through activity groups.
"Within the last year, Sport Bay of Plenty helped 1355 Green Prescriptions patients to reap the health benefits of activities such as walking, swimming or Green Prescription exercise groups," says Health Team Leader Catherine McCulloch.
"The patients that benefit most are those with conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and depression/ anxiety. It is fantastic to see the difference that the programme can make to people's quality and enjoyment of life. We are delighted to hear that 81 per cent of people are satisfied with the service we provide.
"In the past year, we have noticed an increased attendance at our Green Prescription groups across the Bay of Plenty. Not only do people enjoy the health benefits of becoming more active, but they enjoy the social interaction with others and often make lasting friendships."
One of the Green Prescription initiatives in the Western Bay of Plenty, the Mount Challenge, recently won the 2010 Golden Foot Awards for Best Small Walking Project.
More than 30,000 people throughout New Zealand are currently following a Green Prescription. Most of the contract holders now provide community based physical activity programmes for those on Green Prescription and wanting to make lifestyle changes.
For further information on Green Prescription talk to your general practitioner or practice nurse, call 0800 ACTIVE (0800 228 483) or visit www.moh.govt.nz/greenprescription or www.sportbop.co.nz
