This colourful event is coming up during the school holidays with three members of the New Zealand Kite Association (NZKA) bringing a colourful display of different kites. Depending on the breeze a giant 6-metre bear, 5m octopus, a 2.5m shark, 3.5mflamingo, a flying spirit, butterfly kites in trains, arches with 30 kites and kite trains with stars could form a spectacle of colour flying in the sky along Island View Reserve at Waihi Beach.
Katikati's kite man, John Russell is an NZKA member and invites everyone to join in and fly their kites at the same place and at the same time, creating a colourful spectacle from 10am onwards, on Sunday, October 7.
More than 200 people turned out last year and John is hoping for similar numbers, if not more this year. People are encouraged to make, borrow or buy a kite and have a free, fun, family outing.
"A lot of people have got kites but never use them. Others have got kites that don't fly correctly, which can be fixed easily with a few minor technical adjustments." Kitset kites are available during the school holidays at the Flat White Cafe in Shaw Rd, Waihi Beach. There is likely to be a couple of pre-flight days over the weekends prior to the event.
