Tauranga Arts Festival performer Mel Parsons has been named as a finalist for this year's APRA Silver Scroll Award.
The award, which is judged by peers, is for songwriting and Parsons has been nominated for Get Out Alive, a song she wrote after a car crash last year and whichfeatures on her third solo album, Drylands.
The crash happened last August, just minutes from her Christchurch home as the 33-year-old was returning from a ski trip.
She lost control and her car rolled four times - she was lucky to escape serious injury or death. Parsons tours extensively in Australia, North America and Europe and will be appearing on Wednesday, October 28, in Tauranga after a 23-date tour of this country.
She has twice been a finalist in the New Zealand Folk Album of the Year award.
The Silver Scroll, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary, is widely considered the most important music award in New Zealand. The finalists and the winner of the APRA Silver Scroll Award are determined by members of the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) numbering approximately 10,000 songwriters and composers.
The other finalists are Tim Moore and Marlon Williams for Dark Child, Ruban and Kody Nielson for Multi-Love, Anthonie Tonnon for Water Underground and Ella Yelich-O'Connor (Lorde) and Joel Little for Yellow Flicker Beat.
The winner will be announced in Auckland on September 17. Festival tickets are available from Baycourt Theatre or ticketek.co.nz.
