The Shades, comprising Taka Vuni (baritone), Manase Latu (tenor), Ipu Laga'aia (tenor) and Samson Setu (bass), perform a mix of classical and contemporary songs at a Waipuna Hospice fundraiser.

On the first day of university, Samson Setu made a bee-line for the three quiet Polynesian boys sitting at the back of the classroom.

They were Taka Vuni, Manase Latu and Ipu Laga'aia and the four clicked immediately.

A week after meeting at Auckland University's classical studies class, the four got together for their first jam session. They sung the beautifully haunting Ave Maria. There was a moment of silence when they finished - the four instantly knew they had something together.

That was seven years ago. They are now The Shades, a talented quartet of friends who join a wave of singers bringing an appreciation of classical music back to new audiences across the globe.

The Auckland-based group are headlining this year's Waipuna Hospice fundraising event The Shades Concert. It is the last event to be organised by, and final hurrah for fundraising manager Trish Rae who is thrilled to be bringing back the quartet who entranced audiences at their funraiser last year.

The Shades' beginnings were humble. Their gateway into music was school choirs.
More than anything, they love to sing together.

"Performing together is amazing because it's really nice to share the stage with three of my good friends. It's always a great buzz," Samson says.

Three of the four The Shades (Manase, Ipu and Samson) are part of the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, identifying them as stars in the making.

The Shades' recent performances include the Black Barn Winery summer concert in the Hawke's Bay, concerts in Rarotonga and performing for 2000 corporate Lions supporters in the Hall of Legends at Eden Park, prior to the Lions v Blues Match.

The Shades will deliver classical and popular music, a few 17th century songs, Spanish songs, even a rendition of The Hills are Alive and Kiss the Girl from The Little Mermaid.

Trish has arranged a "dynamic and vibrant" supporting act to open the concert. It's a special surprise for The Shades and the audience, she says. She does not want to divulge too many details.

The Shades will be accompanied by musical director and pianist Claire Caldwell. To add a Pasifika flavour to the evening and to acknowledge the Tongan and Samoan heritage of The Shades, the audience is encouraged to wear bright colours, floral shirts or leis.
