HAVING WORDS: Affetto will perform A Play on Words at the Tauranga Park Auditorium. Photo/supplied
Affetto is an Auckland-based, award-winning early music ensemble, comprising five leading early-music exponents. They will perform A Play On Words, which explores the time in musical history when, with the birth of baroque and opera came a dramatic shift in the way music and words worked together. The texts and
musical settings from this era often contained hidden meanings and this makes a highly entertaining programme of lively, poignant and uplifting music.
The combination of soprano, harpsichord, cornetto, viola da gamba and theorbo provides an engaging range of sound colours and allows for flexibility of interpretation. Formed in 2010, the group has quickly become known for innovative and uplifting programming, beauty of sound, and for bringing some often-forgotten music to life in new ways. Affetto has twice won the award for best musical production at the Auckland Fringe Festival.
Members are Jayne Tankersley (soprano), Peter Reid (cornetto, cornetto muto and baroque trumpet), Polly Sussex (viols and baroque cello), Philip Griffin (theorbo), Rachel Griffith-Hughes (harpsichord and organ).
