Work created by some of this country's finest artists will be exhibited at Otumoetai College this month.

Art created by artists such as Dick Frizzell, Philip Clairmont, Peter Madden, Philip Trusttum, in a range of mediums including collage, paintings, digital photography and drawings are on show and members of the public are invited to see the works.

Fifteen artworks have been loaned to the college through the James Wallace Arts Trust institutional loans programme that is a part of a wider educational programme that seeks to expose contemporary New Zealand artworks to a larger audience.

Usually the loan programme operates with Auckland schools only.

However, head of Otumoetai College's visual art department Sarah-Jane Smith approached the trust after reading about it online and after initial discussion with principal Dave Randall and the trust, the college will host the first loan exhibition outside of Auckland. She says not all students have the opportunity to visit an art gallery or would choose to go to one.

Having the art in a school space where students come on a daily basis means they cannot help but see the work and be influenced by it.

"It is extremely important that students see artworks in different contexts and are able to relate to them. The costs to the school are the freighting and installation of the exhibition as well as insurance for the works.

For the past three years Otumoetai College has run a student art auction and this year the auction is fundraising to support the cost of hosting the JWAT exhibition.

About 30 students and a number of art department staff are involved and all will be donating 30 per cent of sale proceeds to support the exhibition.

This year a silent art auction with online bidding will be held, followed by a live event. The online bidding will close at 3pm on Thursday August 20, www.32auctions.com/OTCArtAuction.

The live event is to be held in the Otumoetai College art department from 3.30pm-6.30pm on Friday, August 21 where the winning bidders will be announced, spot prizes will be allocated to the artists and other artworks will be available for purchase.

Wine and nibbles will be provided and the "From the Pah Homestead" exhibition will be open to the public at this time.
