Collaborative installation inspire

A chorus of many threads embodies the infusion of art and upcycling and it is an Incubator project supporting Sustainable Backyards.

It is the third year that the Incubator will be participating in Sustainable Backyards which is a monthly calendar of events and collaborations organised by Envirohub BOP.

The inspirational project aims to build an interactive installation that explores actual interaction between the participants and art.

After seeing this use of discarded CDs and discs in projects, the Incubator task force adapted the idea to become a hanging and ever growing artwork over a month-long period. Recycling unwanted CDs and wool, many hands will weave wool around CDs, creating a new picture of how we relate to each other and our planet.

The CDs, containing images, data and music of many cultures, will be suspended in the middle of the incubator gallery space. The woven discs are able to be walked through, allowed to billow and shimmer with every breath of the wind creating rainbow refractions of light.

The weavings are proving to be as individual and quirky as the people who weave them.

Already, completed cds are arriving - even some by post from Whakatane and Rotorua.

They range from meticulously woven, some freakishly adorned with weird and wonderful items and some even resembled plush toy pigs and sheep.

The team at the Incubator have arranged community workshops to join in and create and weave wondrous artworks together, or stop by and collect some takeaway packs with wool and discs.

The installation will be fully complete by March 20 and the subsequent opportunity to view runs until Sunday, April 6, in the Incubator Gallery space.
