"You just have to go with it kinda thing," sums up beat-boxer extraordinaire Beau Monga's mantra as he starts working on writing and composing his own material. The 21-year-old is taking his beat-boxing, dancing, singing mash-ups on the road this month and performs at Mount Maunganui tonight.

Most of the material he will be performing are covers that got him voted in as X-Factor king this year and Beau says he is looking forward to getting around the country as "a thank-you to all the fans" who voted for him.

The fact that so many people voted for him had given him more drive to keep doing the kind of music that he believed in. "People voting for me - I know now they are interested and amazed by my music. I would have kept doing it anyway - because I believe in it - but it's a real bonus that other people like it," he says.

Behind the baggy clothes and baseball cap, is an earnest young musician who rates his own music and who is positive about who he is and what he has to offer. What's not to love about that?

He says his initial lack of confidence on the X- Factor was due to the fact that he hadn't sung in public before. But he saw this as a chance to grow as a performer and "just go with it".

"I was always going to have to get up and do it at some stage anyway. Performing on X-Factor was good because it got my A into G and it made me prepare - I didn't want to look useless on stage."

But, as for caring what the judges thought - he wasn't deterred by negativity during the process. Beau always believed in himself.

"I'm glad I experienced it, because it got me trying new things. That's how life is ... trying new things."
