Zeus Gallery is showcasing work from the Chrysalis Collection early this month and the exhibition includes a wide array of work from emerging and established artists. The work of Nigel Brown, Owen Dippie and Robin White is a small sample of what the collective will be exhibiting.
The BOP ChrysalisCollective was established in July 2010 and collects original works of art, in any media, by artists who have current or past links with the Bay of Plenty region. Both emerging and established artists are represented in the collection.
The art group in total has 15 members, the majority of whom live in Tauranga and the Mount.
Collecting art as part of a collective is an enjoyable way to buy art and being part of a group means you get to learn a lot more about art, says chairwoman Carmen Dickison.
"Every few months the group gets local BOP artists to talk to the group about their life, inspiration and techniques as well as getting other art specialists ie valuers, framers and gallery owners to upskill the group," she says.
Every three months, three members of the group buy and select a new piece of artwork for the collection.
Sometimes two buying groups may combine their budget to buy an artwork from a more established or well-known artist.
On its five-year anniversary, there are currently 22 art works in the collection by the following 18 artists: Matthew Brauchli, Mark Braunias, Nigel Brown, Raye Catran, Arthur Dagley, Owen Dippie, Nick Eggleston, Mandy Hague, Luke Hollis, Kathryn Madill, Elliot Mason, Doreen McNeill, Venetta Miles, Duane Moyle, Don Overbeay, Don Peebles, John Roy, Robin White.
