Some exciting exhibitions are scheduled at Gallery59 on Ninth Ave this month and next, where the focus is on quality original artwork and an ever-changing display of art and objects.
"We have a real passion for showing amazing new talent as well as the work of already recognised artists, andin July and August, we have plenty of that", explains Gallery59's curator Lynette Fisher.
"From the 2nd of July we are proud to display Graham Crow's show Lighten Up. Graham has been on an amazing journey lately and is now focussing on a large-scale, new direction. He is not quite Tauranga's best-kept secret, but he certainly is a true master at what he does," she says.
Graham Crow is a Tauranga-based artist who is best known for his recent series of huge multi-panel abstract works, but he is also recognised for his retrospective art-like studies of nudes and iris paintings.
"My work now is much more abstract, which I think is more lasting than the realistic pieces. It holds more mystery, and I really enjoy exploring colours, textures and abstract form," says Graham.
Lynette says: "The show has been named Lighten Up, as it basically is a clean-out of his studio. It has artist drawings and some smaller scale works. This show is a great opportunity for people to get a real good deal on an original Graham Crow."
Graham, whose studio will be recreated to some extent at Gallery59, says: "I will be around to share stories, and to explain the thought and processes behind the work. I intend to be working on drawings when I'm there, too.
"My big set of drawers, which holds most of my work, has been moved to Gallery59 and people can have a look through it if they like. It was time for a clean-out, as I am heading in another direction with some new ideas and studies at the moment. I really need to make some space," he says.
