Walkways show how the history of Tauranga still has a powerful influence over the downtown business district today.
A variety of points of interest are all within easy walking distance in the downtown area.
The Elms Mission house in Mission Street is the oldest building in Tauranga. It stands on the site
of the former Te Papa Mission Station. Although it is privately owned, the public are welcome to walk around it during the day.
From Cliff Road you can visit the Mission Cemetery, Monmouth Redoubt, Robbins Park or simply picnic in the rose gardens. From this elevated position lovely views of the harbour can be enjoyed.
Follow the steps down from the Redoubt to the Te Awanui Waka on The Strand.
Walk along The Strand reclamation that follows the waterfront, and continue along the path before walking up the stairs to Elizabeth Street. Continue across the Cameron Road intersection and join onto the Waikareao Walkway or stroll through The Wharapei Domain.
Alternatively you can adjourn your walk and savour downtown Tauranga's atmosphere from one of the many sidewalk cafes.
WALKING TIME:
Varies depending on time spent at each site. Allow half a day to take in everything.
