The Meat Industry Association says the MAF vets' strike is having a devastating impact on North Island plants.
Around 100 MAF vets who inspect export meat are striking over a pay dispute, while 40 have opted to work.
Association head Brian Lynch says the situation is grim in the North Island with only a handful of meat plants operating, while the South Island is running at almost full production.
He says the workforce is suffering, with no wages being paid, farmers are having stock sent back, and companies are struggling to fill overseas contracts.
He expects MAF and the vets union will go back to the negotiating table on Monday.
