A North Korean army officer has paid the ultimate price for failing to grieve during the official period of mourning for former leader Kim Jong-il.

Kim Chol was executed by mortar shell after he was caught drinking during the 100-day period that followed the Dear Leader's death last December.

The Daily Mail reports he was ordered to stand on the spot where a mortar was targeted and was obliterated by the blast.
