KEY POINTS:
NUSA DUA - Australian drug traffickers Schapelle Corby and Renae Lawrence could be handed an early Christmas present, a sentence cut to mark the upcoming holiday.
The two Australians are among 59 inmates at Bali's Kerobokan Prison who are in line for Christmas sentence cuts this year, said Made Suardana, the registration chief of Bali's Justice Office.
"There are three foreigners suggested [for sentence cuts], among them are Schapelle Corby and Renae Lawrence," Suardana said, adding they could each have a month shaved off their sentences.
Corby, 31, is serving a 20-year jail term after she was caught at Bali's airport in October 2004 with 4.1kg of marijuana in her boogie board bag.
It has been a tough year for Corby, who was in hospital for several weeks for severe depression in June after her final legal avenue, a judicial review, was dismissed by Indonesia's Supreme Court.
Both she and Lawrence - who is also serving 20 years for her role in the failed Bali Nine plot to smuggle more than 8kg of heroin from Bali in 2005 - also had several months sliced off their sentences in August to mark Indonesia's Independence Day.
"If this one-month remission is accepted Corby should be freed on March 13, 2024, while Renae should be free on April 23, 2024," Suardana said.
Indonesia traditionally cuts jail terms on Independence Day and some religious holidays.
