Heavy rain is affecting large parts of the west and north of the South Island.

The MetService has issued a severe weather warning with the bulk of the rain expected to fall in the ranges of Buller and north-west Nelson.

Up to 270 millimetres is expected to fall.

A warning is also in place for Mt Taranaki, with significant rain forecast throughout the weekend.
