A relaxed family atmosphere was expected at Kai Iwi Beach over the New Year period, Kai Iwi Beach Holiday Park manager Dante Powels said.
"There's nothing special planned but people will be bringing their families and spending the day at the beach," Mr Powels said.
"We have a high percentage of people coming out from Whanganui to stay with us and we've had quite a few more international visitors this year from Germany, France, Netherlands and a few from Finland."
Mr Powels said the holiday park now had a fish and chip shop and had upgraded its amenities and ablution facilities.
Karla Swainson, of Whanganui Seaside Holiday Park at Castlecliff, said she was not aware of any special events happening at Castlecliff Beach for New Year.
With a full house, they are planning a New Year barbecue for their guests, Mrs Swainson said. The holiday park has been booked out over the holiday period and they had to turn people away.
Mrs Swainson said it was disappointing that there was no public fireworks display planned for Whanganui for New Year's Eve.
Lifeguards are on duty at Kai Iwi and Castlecliff beaches from noon to 6pm every day and flags will be out when it is safe to swim. People can check daily swimming condition updates on Facebook at Wanganui Beach Report.
For those who are out and about enjoying a few drinks for New Year, bear in mind the permanent alcohol bans in a number of areas of Whanganui and the annual New Year's Eve ban at Kai Iwi Beach.
