The Men's Shed is a hive of activity on Tuesdays and Thursdays when it's Wicksteed Street doors open for members to work on their projects. It's name though is a misnomer, the club has five women members and is keen to reach out for more of both genders.
"Not all our members are active. They join, complete their project, then don't come back again for a while until they have another project to work on," committee member John McGowan said. "So we could do with a few more."
Newly retired real estate agent Lynn Waters turned up asking if somebody could do a small job for her. "They convinced me to to do it myself. They supplied all the tools and helped me with the project. A month later I was the treasurer," Mrs Waters said.
As well record player arms, all sorts of interesting things get made or repaired at the shed.
John Wicks, a Waverley builder for over 60 years, makes coffins, which are then made available through the club for sale for about $400. Bumble Bee nests are another oddball thing made at the shed.
"Mostly folk work on their own projects. But we do community projects as well. We made trays on criss-cross stands to serve food on for the Women's Refuge Great Ball," Mr McGowan said.
The club started in 2012 and operates out of a leased building on the Tupoho complex in Wicksteed St.
It has just about every tool and skill covered - lathes, bandsaws, handtools and more.
Some members lend or donate their own tools. "Sometimes we get people who have downsized their home and don't have a workshop any longer, so they use ours," Mr McGowan said.
Perhaps the most valuable resource at the shed though is its members, engineers, cabinetmakers, upholsterers ... "everyone is willing to help each other out, we usually have someone with the expertise that's needed."
"It is a place where you can apply and share your skills and knowledge with others in a social setting, as well as learn new ways and means to successfully complete personal projects."
Membership costs $25 per year or non-members can pay to have items made or repaired, providing there is someone willing and able to do it.
Opening hours are Tuesday and Thursday between 9am-3pm.
