This man, crossing the Victoria Ave-Taupo Quay intersection, was not the only one caught in the downpour that hit Wanganui mid-afternoon yesterday. Lightning, thunder and torrential rain pounded the city around 3pm.
MetService said the storm was carried on a low that moved southeast over the North Island during the day, creating ideal conditions for thunderstorms.
Wanganui Fire Service was called out to at least one home in Toi St, Tawhero, to deal with some superficial flooding and there were reports of a leak in the roof of the Countdown supermarket in Victoria Ave. Cars on Virginia Rd were also taking evasive action to avoid surface flooding.
