Brian Frost joined the navy to see the world but it wasn't really the sort of world he dreamt of seeing.
Instead, the Royal New Zealand Navy engineer was aboard RNZN ships that went to war. Mr Frost, now 74, joined the navy in 1957 and six months after basic training he was at sea.
The training base for him was Motuihe Island in the Hauraki Gulf and his first posting was on a ship that was sent to Korea. Then came tours of duty during the Malayan conflict and finally a stint in the waters off Vietnam. He attended his first Anzac Day commemoration in 1960 as a 22-year-old and that was three years after he signed on for his navy career.
Mr Frost said going to Anzac Day services always stirred up a lot of emotions for him.
"I remember those blokes who were on land and involved in the fighting there. At least we were out at sea firing shells at the enemy," he said.
