Neighbourhood support groups around Wairarapa have marked Neighbours Day with a number of events celebrating their success.
Masterton Neighbourhood Support held a thank-you afternoon tea at the Frank Cody Lounge on Saturday, with mayor Lyn Patterson on hand to present the groups with certificates.
Featherston held its own thank-you on Sunday at the Community Centre, where Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Osland answered questions and mayor Adrienne Staples presented the group leaders with certificates.
Mrs Staples said she hoped Neighbourhood Support would become established in the other South Wairarapa towns.
"It's about people looking out for people rather than waiting for someone else to do it. So the more that you can have set up in any town, the more resilient they are when we have any emergency or distress."
Communities taking care of themselves was important, Mrs Staples said.
She praised the commitment of Robyn Ramsden, Featherston co-ordinator, and said Neighbourhood Support helped make a healthy community.
"And if you make a community that cares, then crime can't flourish."
Mrs Staples presented group leaders John Schrader, Amy Sutich, Perry Cameron and Robyn Ramsden with certificates acknowledging their contribution.
