Hours after giant catamaran Team Adventure set a speed record in the non-stop race around the globe, crew members yesterday discovered that their boat was falling apart.
American skipper Cam Lewis decided to divert to Cape Town to make repairs to the delamination on the starboard side of the main beam. The area also suffered damage to the outer skin and core.
Two crewmen were hurt during the record-breaking bash through the Southern Ocean, and are recovering in their bunks - Michael Lundh nursing a sprained neck, and Jeffrey Wago a bruised pelvis.
Team Adventure set a 24-hour speed record for The Race of 612.5 miles. It was still short of the world mark, 625 miles, set by Grant Dalton's Club Med last year.
Club Med is now well out in front - 740 miles ahead of the nearest racing boat, Innovation Explorer.
Dalton is taking extreme care as his boat speeds along at 30 knots through fields of icebergs.
