PlayStation3 - ApocolyPS3 is over

The 'fat' PlayStation3 bug has been fixed, gamers are now safe to log on to PlayStation Network.

Up to 30 million PlayStation 3 users worldwide are breathing a sigh of relief after Sony fixed what was quickly labelled the 'ApocolyPS3' on its PlayStation Network overnight.

Yesterday, early versions of the PlayStation 3 console became virtually useless with Sony warning gamers that they could lose data if they logged on to PlayStation Network - generally an auto log-in for most console gaming enthusiasts.

Only 'fat' PlayStations were affected - the slimmed down next-gen machine that was released last year was immune.

The problem was units' clock times defaulting to December 31, 1999, making them unable to start.

The Y2K-tybe bug didn't discriminate over timezones due to the PlayStation using the UTC time standard in the first instance and applying changes from there.

Corrupted game trophy data can be restored by loading the games in question.
