A total of 348 cupcakes were sold at Stratford Primary School on Friday to help another Cupcake - an orangutan called Cupcake and his mother, Sam.
Twelve-year-old Lucy Green and her friends Cassidy Baker (12) and Anika Harris-Willing (11) spent much of last Thursday baking and icing cupcakes at school ready to sell to their friends the next day to help raise money for the Orangutan Project.
This charitable organisation helps orangutans such as Sam and Cupcake, and Lucy is a firm supporter of the charity.
The kind-hearted youngster puts aside 50 cents of her pocket money each week to go to a charity, as does brother Billy. At the end of the year, the siblings count up how much they have put aside for charity and decide where to donate it.
While Billy often chooses to send his money to World Wildlife Fund, Lucy has been sending her money to the Orangutan Project since she and her brother started saving for charity three years ago.
Lucy says Sam, Cupcake's mother, was rescued from a Malaysian zoo a few years ago and cared for by the Orangutan Project.
Before she was fully rehabilitated she became pregnant with Cupcake.
Sam did not have the skills to teach her own baby how to survive in the wild so the two orangutans have stayed at the centre where staff are working with them both to get them ready to be released into the wild.
The fundraising day was a great success, and once the cost of ingredients was covered, the three youngsters raised a total of $320 to help Cupcake and her mother.
