Taranaki will be well represented at the Trans-Tasman Challenge hockey tournament later this year, with three local players selected to represent the country in the masters competition.

Grant Boyde, Adrian Lobb and Alan Bunning have all been selected to take the turf in the New Zealand at Whangarei later this year.

"Ten years ago masters grade was a bit of a giggle and a hit around, but now days its a very serious competition and an achievement to be selected," says Alan.

The trio's members have all represented New Zealand before at the Trans-Tasman Challenge hockey tournament and are thrilled to have been selected again for 2017.

"There were close to 30 players trialling for our team, including ex international players so it's a huge honour to be chosen," says Grant.

The team will face Australian rivals in a three test series in May.

Adrian says there is a high level of competition at the tournament and the three men are currently training with the Lighting 5s team here in Stratford to build up their fitness levels.

"The Lighting 5s is a very high intensity form of hockey, so it kicks up our fitness levels before the tournament."

Grant says the numbers of junior hockey players in Taranaki has been growing from strength to strength.

"It is awesome to be able to show these young players that a national selection is well within their grasp."

Grant says all three of the players have been involved in hockey at all levels throughout the years, through coaching and umpiring.

"Representing the country is a great legacy for us to create for the younger players."
