TE AWAMUTU - A Waipa district councillor has been dumped from a council committee for non-attendance.
The council voted 7-6 to replace Te Awamutu lawyer James Parlane on its regulatory committee.
Mr Parlane had threatened legal action if the council sacked him, but he said yesterday that he would instead fight the council at the next election. He did not rule out standing for the mayoralty.
Mr Parlane attended only two of the last 10 committee meetings.
He accused the council of a witchhunt against him, saying he had opposed various council projects that he considered wasteful.
The council's general manager, John Inglis, said Mr Parlane would not resign from the committee when asked to. Councillor Gaidyn Flay would take his place on the committee.
Committee chairwoman Diane Sharpe said the council had the power to decide the makeup of its committees.
She said it was not a witchhunt against Mr Parlane, but his commitments as a lawyer meant he was not able to attend many of the meetings.
