Little-known Austrian Werner Eschauer upset top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the Munich Open tennis tournament yesterday.
Qualifier Eschauer, ranked 175th in the world, played close to perfection for a shock claycourt victory over the former French Open winner.
Kafelnikov also disappeared in the first round on the Monte Carlo clay last month, losing to another unheralded Austrian, Markus Hipfl.
Swede Thomas Enqvist, the second seed, cruised into the second round with a straightforward 6-4, 6-1 win over Daniel Elsner, of Germany.
