Rio Olympics 2016: Actor Matthew McConaughey attends women's sevens as USA fan

Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey has been pictured pitch side at Deodoro Stadium, kitted out in USA supporters gear while supporting the USA women's sevens team at the Rio Olympics.

The one-time Academy Award winner was in Rio supporting not just his nation's female sevens team, but also other American competitors competing in other events throughout the Games, including the USA swimming team.

The Interstellar actor had many starstruck admirers at the sevens stadium, including Kiwis Melodie Robinson and Sarah Goss, who took to social media to share photos with the celebrity.

The USA women's sevens side qualified for the quarter-finals of the Olympics as one of the two third-placed qualifiers in their group, but just fell short to the New Zealand women's side 5-0 after a Portia Woodman try.

They play France for fifth spot at 9am this morning (NZT), while the USA men's side kick off their campaign tomorrow morning against Argentina at 4am (NZT).
