Sionann Murphy and Nia Wallace will run and bike as far as they can in an indoor multi-sport race at Auckland's Vector Arena this morning, to raise funds for a charity that has given them so much.
The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation provided the two girls, who have cerebral palsy, with modified bikes and swimming lessons so they could compete in the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon over the past two years. Sionann, 10, from St Joseph's School in Takapuna, said they were now giving back to the foundation by raising money for other disabled athletes.
"We are trying to raise money for people like us to get more stuff, like what me and Nia need, and to get more equipment for people ... who can't afford to get a bike, or a trike, or any equipment."
The inaugural Halberg Tri Challenge has 83 teams competing, each team made up of a runner, a cyclist and a rower.
Sionann's school friend Ashling Shand joined the team as the rower.
