Football Ferns coach Tony Readings refused to shake the hand of his Chinese counterpart after today's controversial 2-2 draw at the Women's World Cup that saw New Zealand fail to qualify for the second round. Joseph Pearson looks at five other instances in sport.
1. Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra
Suarez refused to shake Evra's hand before Manchester United faced Liverpool at Old Trafford in 2012. The Uruguayan has been no stranger to controversy throughout his career and he served an eight game ban for racially abusing Evra in the reverse Premier League fixture earlier that season. Suarez denied being a racist but his refusal to shake Evra's hand did little to improve his public image and the incident caused quite a stir in the British press.
2. Wayne Bridge
and John Terry The pair were good mates when the pair played together at Chelsea but their relationship was finished in front of Sky Sports cameras before Chelsea and Manchester City's Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge in 2010. Bridge, now playing for City, refused to shake his hand before the game following revelations that Terry had been having an affair with Bridge's ex-girlfriend - French lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel. It was the first time the pair had come face to face and Bridge's public rebuke was a firm stance.
3. Jose Mourinho and Phil Parkinson
League One side Bradford City were on the verge of one of the greatest shocks in the history of the FA Cup as they were leading Premier League leaders Chelsea 4-2 at Stamford Bridge back in January. As Bradford's Mark Yeates scored their fourth goal in stoppage time, Jose Mourinho went over to shake the hand of their manager Phil Parkinson. The referee hadn't blown up for fulltime so Parkinson refused because the game wasn't over yet. Mourinho did go into Bradford's changing room after the game to congratulate the team on their famous win which Parkinson described as a "real touch of class". All's well that ends well.
4. Terry Butcher and Diego Maradona
Former England stalwart Terry Butcher was on Scotland's coaching staff for their friendly with Argentina, managed by Diego Maradona, back in 2008. Butcher, still angry with Maradona for his infamous "Hand of God" goal in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico against England, said: "I have to share a technical area with him but that is it as far as I'm concerned." Twenty-two years is a long time but not long enough for some and Butcher said he would never forgive Maradona. I think a handshake is out of the question, then.
5. John Key
Who can forget John Key's three-way handshake with Richie McCaw and Bernard Lapasset before the All Blacks were presented the World Cup in 2011? New Zealanders were relishing the moment that iconic captain McCaw would raise the famous Webb Ellis trophy above his head to end 24 years of hurt but ,Instead the public witnessed the most awkward handshake anyone had ever seen.
