Olympics: Newdick underway in decathlon

Decathlete Brent Newdick's Olympic campaign has begun with the 100m at the Olympic Stadium.

The Kiwi recorded a time of 11.10 in the first of 10 events, which was quick enough to earn 838 points and place 22nd in the 31-man field.

He faired better in the next two events. In the long jump Newdick finished 11th overall with 900 points then posted a personal best in the shot put, 15.09m and 795pts.

He currently lies 11th overall with the high jump and 400m later today - he will return tomorrow for a further five events.
