Tennis: NZ complete rout of Philippines

New Zealand have completed a 5-0 rout of the Philippines in their Davis Cup Asia-Oceania group one tennis tie at Hawera.

The hosts won both reverse singles after entering the final day holding an unassailable 3-0 advantage.

New Zealand non-playing captain Marcel Vos took the opportunity to give his more inexperienced players court time today.

Marcus Daniell dropped his opening set but was thereafter too good for world top-20 ranked junior Jeson Patrombon as he won 4-6 6-3 6-3.

Russian-born Artem Sitak then showed plenty of resolve to beat former top 100 player Cecil Mamiit .

Despite a code violation by Mamiit when the Filipino kicked a courtside sign Sitak maintained his concentration to win 6-4 7-5.

The 5-0 scoreline thrilled Vos.

"Five nil is what we wanted. It's what we were hoping for at the beginning of the clash," he said.

"It was a real team effort.

"Being 3-0 up gave us the opportunity to give Marcus and Artem a chance to play in the singles. I'm really proud of the team to play the way they did."

New Zealand sealed the tie in yesterday's doubles which Daniell and Sitak beat Ruben Gonzales and Mamiit in straight sets, the country's first Cup doubles success in two years.

New Zealand, who will now remain in group one, do not play again until February next year.
