A severe weather watch has been issued for Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty, with MetService saying a "burst of heavy rain" is possible tonight and tomorrow.
A complex area of low pressure northeast of the North Island is moving southwest, bringing rain to parts of the North Island stretching from Auckland to East Cape and Wairarapa, MetService said tonight.
"There is still some uncertainty as to the depth and track of the low, but it now looks possible that Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty will see some heavy and possibly thundery falls."
People are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings.
