Ngongotaha AFC have had a game to forget, going down 7-0 against Waiheke United.
It was a game that had everything, including a red card and an own goal, on what turned out to be a tough day at the office for Ngongotaha.
Waiheke are yet to lose a game in Division 2 this season and they showed why as their quick, accurate passing pulled the Ngongotaha defence apart.
Already down 1-0 early in the first half, Ngongotaha made life harder for themselves as Josh O'Sullivan was sent from the field after allegedly elbowing an opposition player.
Ngongotaha coach Shane Davis described the game as "a bit of a hiding".
"Being down to 10 men didn't help.
"They are a quality team, they knock the ball around really well.
"Full credit to our guys though, it could've been a lot more but we never spat the dummy, just battled on.
"The floodgates really could've opened at the end but we kept trying," Davis said.
Being the first year Ngongotaha have played in the Northern League, they were taking each game as a learning experience, he said.
If they can get a few more wins and avoid relegation he expects the players to improve next year.
"It's a bit of a battle this season, they're not really used to it, but it's a learning curve.
"Some of our players are only young and they're still growing."
Next week Ngongotaha play Claudelands at home - last time the sides met Ngongotaha were down 3-0 but came back to draw 3-3.
"It'll be a totally different game this time, we'll be more focused."
