Rotorua is already renowned for its geothermal landscapes, adrenalin activities and mountain biking.
Now, if a horror enthusiast can get enough backers, Rotorua can add haunted house to its list of attractions.
Patric Foley has launched a project on Kickstarter called Atmosfear. It is a haunted house with a difference.
Participants work as a team to search rooms, solve puzzles and ultimately survive. Mr Foley, a scriptwriter and digital film student, has been thinking about this for 10 years. Now he wants to make it a reality.
"I'm a big fan of gaming and there are a few games out there which are survival horror. I thought about making a video game into reality. People like to be a hero but they also like to have their pants scared off them."
The Kickstarter project has 16 days to go. Mr Foley wants to raise $8000 to help pay for rental of a suitable house, actors and props.
"The goal is to survive the lurking horror around every corner. The atmosphere in the old haunted house will only add to the adventure you embark on to get out alive."
Mr Foley wants to open the house in time for Halloween on October 31 and ultimately have it open regularly for group bookings throughout summer.
"In Australia there are heaps of live events," Mr Foley said.
"Here we have Spookers in Auckland and CornEvil type mazes but they are so far away. This is slightly different."
He said he had a few properties in mind but that was top secret for now.
