As a newcomer to Rotorua, one of the most appealing aspects of this fair city is the recreational facilities and opportunities that exist.
Last week I was at a local cafe and happened upon four men who were enjoying their latte while watching a video taken with a GoPro video camera affixed to one of their group's helmets. They were all animated and offering some whoops of excitement in response to the expertise of the rider.
The footage was impressive and I guessed correctly when I asked them if the mountain biking video footage was taken within the Whakarewarewa forest. I learned that these four gentlemen live in Brisbane and as a "boys' trip" they come to Rotorua every year specifically to enjoy the mountain biking.
As a mountain biker myself, albeit a distinct amateur, I am excited that Rotorua is about to host Crankworx 2015, cited as one of the very best mountain biking events in the world.
While Crankworx is normally held at Les Deux Alpes, France, and then Whistler, Canada, we have been fortunate enough to see this event extended to include Rotorua. Over the period of March 25-29, we will see between 6000 and 20,000 people visit Rotorua for the purpose of attending Crankworx, events either at Skyline on Fairy Springs Road or at Whakarewarewa Forest.
I am told that between 450 and 750 competitors are expected to participate in the events with the remaining visitors comprising supporters and spectators. There will also be entertainment including live music provided at the Village Green where racing will be streamed live from the venue. This will be a terrific opportunity for families to enjoy the sights and sounds around a spectacular event.
From my perspective I would like to see that our guests to Rotorua enjoy a safe visit, free from crime and interference to the enjoyment of their holiday. Similarly for our locals, let's enjoy the events in safety.
If you are out and about with your mountain bike please ensure that you are there to be seen. Wear your helmet, use lighting at night and it's a good idea to wear a high-visibility vest at all times when riding. Please make sure that your bike is secured should you go walkabout. This means having it locked to a fixed object.
If you're a guest staying at a local hotel or motel I recommend that you do not leave your bike attached to your car overnight. A number of hospitality outlets offer secure storage for your bike, so do not hesitate to ask.
If you are out enjoying the many licensed premises within the CBD please look after each other and ensure that you have arranged safe transportation to and from your place of origin.
Traffic is likely to be busy within the CBD next week so be careful, show courtesy to other road users.
Have a great time next week and keep safe.
