Joint replacement surgery is a guarantee of continuing on with an active life, says Shirley McPetrie.
Mrs McPetrie, 83, was among 60 joint replacement patients who joined the Joint Walk from Queen Elizabeth Hospital around Government Gardens yesterday, to help raise funds for orthopaedic research.
"I ran a marathon when I was younger and had a very active life," she said.
The onset of arthritis forced her to curb her interests until she had two knee replacements four years ago.
She was walking again and feeling "like a spring chicken" within three weeks, she said.
"The promotion day is a great way to get people who suffer from arthritis out and walking and make others aware of a very worthy cause."
Orthopaedic surgeon Dawie van Nieuwenhuizen said all the people who participated in the 1km walk had all had joint replacement surgery.
"Replacement operations help improve the quality of life for many of these people who may not have been able to walk if they had not had surgery."
