Rotorua's Te Kura o Te Koutu was transformed into a suburb of Mexico City on Saturday to mark the Central American country's Day of the Dead celebrations.
Mexican food and culture - including mariachi bands, sombreros and traditional food - transformed the school's playgrounds into an authentic market as a fundraiser for the school's annual trip to Mexico.
The multilingual school is in the final stages of raising money to send 27 Year 11 pupils to Mexico for a three-month study visit next January.
Each student, who has been taught Spanish since Year 1, had raised nearly $10,500 for the trip overseas. Proceeds from the market will top up any outstanding costs.
The Day of the Dead - or Dia de los Muertos in Spanish - is a major holiday in Mexico and school principal Uenuku Fairhall said the market was a great success.
