Any local student looking to become an accredited masseuse no longer need travel to Tauranga or Auckland to achieve this status.
Enrolments are now open for Waiariki Bay of Plenty Polytechnic's new Certificate in Sport and Health Massage in Rotorua.
It is the first adopted qualification to be added to the former Waiariki Institute of Technology's range of study options since the institute's merger with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.
"Rotorua is the relaxation and spa capital of New Zealand, and qualified massage therapists are in high demand here and across the globe," health and sport, health studies head of department Amanda Heapy said.
"Finally people in our community can learn anatomy, physiology and the massage techniques required to deliver a safe and beneficial service as an accredited massage practitioner, without moving away from home."
Ms Heapy said the 17-week class is limited to 20 places, and she encouraged people to apply quickly as spots were predicted to fill fast.
"Massage can provide both psychological and physical relief; including for relaxation, stress and for injury treatment and prevention. This qualification can also be the first step to a graduate starting their own massage business."
QE Health Wellness and Rehabilitation Centre general manager Andrina Romano said the new health-focused option could not have come at a better time for local industry.
"Spa therapy has been a big part of our holistic approach to healthcare for over 70 years."
Ms Heapy said the rapid growth in the local wellness sector would increase the demand for well-trained therapists.
"We're looking forward to working with Waiariki Bay of Plenty Polytechnic to continue to raise standards in the massage profession and maintain Rotorua's reputation for excellence in healthcare."
