Two people were trapped in the wreck of their vehicle and had to be freed by fire crews after they crashed at a Wellington intersection tonight.

A police spokeswoman said the crash happened at the corner of Wilton Rd and Churchill Dr just before 8pm. It was not clear how many cars were involved.

Fire, ambulance and police officers are all at the scene after being called around 7.55pm.

The spokeswoman said both people had now been freed from their vehicle. She did not know what injuries they had sustained.

The police Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said two fire appliances were at the scene but said one person was still trapped.
