Three people have died overnight in separate incidents around the country.
A 67-year-old woman died after being hit by a car in the Far North.
The incident happened on State Highway 12, at Ohaeawai, near Kaikohe, just after 11pm, a police spokeswoman said.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
Further down the country, a person was found dead after the car they were driving plunged into the water at a beach in Canterbury.
Police were notified about 9.45pm last night that a car had been seen going into the water at Kairaki Beach.
The car was fully submerged when emergency services arrived. The driver of the car was found dead soon after.
The driver's body was recovered by police last night and work is underway this morning to notify the person's family.
A third person has died in a house fire in Dunedin.
Crews were called to Nutsford St in Brockville around midnight.
They found a Housing New Zealand unit, which was in a block of four, on fire.
Fire and Emergency told NZME the only person who lived in the house died in the fire and the other units have been evacuated because of smoke damage.
A Housing New Zealand spokesperson said they were aware of the fire but could not comment any further while the incident was being handled by emergency services.
Fire and Emergency spokesman Riwai Grace said the blaze was "well involved" when the first appliance arrived.
A scene guard is in place and a fire investigator will be investigating the cause of the fire this morning.
Police are yet to release the names of the three people who died overnight.
