One person has been seriously injured in a single car crash, which has closed a rural Kaukapakapa road.

Emergency services were notified of the crash at 2.37pm.

Northern fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond said two people were trapped in the wreckage and firefighters used cutting equipment to free them.

One person was flown to Auckland Hospital by Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter and another was believed to be moderately hurt.

Police have closed the road between Kaipara Coast Highway and Waitoki to allow fire crews access.

The crash happened approximately 200m from an intersection.

A police spokesman said the vehicle, a blue car, was on its side and off the road when police arrived.
