A person is in a critical condition and a road is closed after a serious crash in southeast Auckland this morning.

The accident happened at about 8.50am when two cars collided on Whitford Rd.

St John Ambulance said two people were taken to hospital for treatment. One had suffered critical injuries and the other had moderate injuries.

New Zealand Transport Agency said the crash happened between Whitford Park and Somerville Rds.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said fire crews attended the accident. No one was trapped in either car.

Police had now set up cordons at the intersections of Somerville, Point View and Whitford Rds.

NZTA warned motorists could expect delays in the area and those heading along the road were advised to take a different route.
