One lane is closed and there are significant delays for motorists after a car and motorcycle crash in Huntly.

Police are attending the crash on SH1 in the Waikato town and are advising motorists to avoid the area.

The 8pm crash involved a car and a motorcycle.

"The northbound lane at the crash site is closed and traffic is moving through the area using the southbound lane with stop/go management," police said.

"Due to the lane closure traffic is backing up and motorists are experiencing significant delays."

Police asked motorists travelling south to turn off at Huntly at the Tainui Bridge and use Hakarimata Rd. Vehicles travelling north should cross the Waipa River and use Hakarimata Rd on the western side of the river.

The NZ Transport Agency also told motorists to avoid travelling on SH1 near Huntly.

The road is closed between Tainui Bridge Rd in Huntly and Waingaro Rd in Ngaruawahia, the agency said. Detours are in place.

Two people have moderated injuries and the Serious Crash Unit will investigate, police said.
