A man needed 200 stitches after he was wounded in a vicious knife attack in Paraparaumu.

Wellington police say the serious assault happeend in Mazengarb Rd about midnight on Saturday.

A 20-year-old man received a large cut to his side with a craft knife or similar weapon and was taken to hospital in a stable condition. He had to have about 200 stitches.

Today police appealed for help from the public as they hunted for the weapon used in the vicious assault.

They are asking if anyone has found a knife in the area around Mazengarb Rd, Te Atiawa Park, the Manly St beachfront or Paraparaumu golf course to contact their local police station.

Police have charged a 32-year-old man with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They are not looking for anyone else in relation to the attack.
