A police spokeswoman said the trio smashed their way into the main entrance of the locked restaurant and demanded workers lie on the ground. No one was injured. The McDonald's was only open to drive-through customers at the time.

Police said the men made off on foot with the cash.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and a scene examination is under way.
