A vegetation fire 300m by 300m in Christchurch has now been contained.
Fire Service southern shift manager Tim Reynolds said they were called around 7.15pm to the "very rural" fire. Eight crews attended the blaze in Tai Tapu and got it under control quickly.
No helicopters were required and crews were now leaving the scene, Reynolds said.
