A property has been extensively damaged after a house fire near Westport on Friday night.

Southern Fire Service shift manager Riwai Grace said they got a call around 7.45pm that a house was on fire on Lower Buller Gorge Rd, southwest of Reefton.

It took around 20 minutes for fire crews to get to the rural property. When they arrived they found "the property well involed in fire", Grace said.

"Unfortunately the house was extensively damaged."

Three fire crews attended and a fire investigator and police will attend today to asses the cause of the blaze.

Grace said they had no reports anyone was on the property.
