A dispute over a loaf of bread escalated to an assault on a dairy owner and threats from an axe-wielding woman.
Police said the incident in Hastings began when a man got into a dispute with the owner of the Duke St Dairy in Mahora about 5pm yesterday.
The owner tried to remove the man, who then allegedly punched the owner several times in the head, causing bruising to both of his eyes.
A shopkeeper then hit the man with a stick and he fled the scene.
A short time later, the man's partner approached the store with an axe and threatened the owners.
Police said a 26-year-old woman was arrested and charged with possession of an offensive weapon and threatening behaviour. She will appear in Hastings District Court on Monday.
Police are still trying to find the man who assaulted the owner.
